According to the American Medical Association, hormone replacement therapy is "vastly underused" among American women experiencing menopause. Why? Medical research changes over time. A single 2002 article led many women and their doctors to reject hormone replacement therapy for decades. More current research indicates that HRT benefits women in most cases, helping them stay vital and healthy for longer.

What are the benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy can be highly effective in reducing symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, including:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats.

  • Vaginal dryness, itching, discomfort, or pain during intercourse.

  • Mood changes and depression

HRT reduces your risk of some of most common diseases associated with aging in women, including:

  • Osteoporosis or breaking a bone

  • Sleep problems and mood disturbances

  • Colon cancer

  • Diabetes

  • Dementia

Some women in their 30s and 40s experience hormonal imbalances and also benefit from estrogen and progesterone therapy.

At what age should you consider HRT?

There are risks involved with all medical treatments, including hormone replacement therapy. One 2002 study led many women to stop taking hormone replacement therapy, despite its benefits. More current research reported in Medical News Today says the 2002 study was flawed, and, for most menopausal women, "the benefits far outweigh the risks."

In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, "If hormone therapy is started before the age of 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits appear to outweigh the risks . .:" The Cleveland Clinic agrees: "Taking HRT in your 40s or 50s is typically not associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease." So, if you are under 60, now is the ideal time to talk to your healthcare practitioner about HRT!
